Is Watermelon Low FODMAP?
As summer approaches, watermelon is that perfect refreshing snack to cool down in the heat.
However, if you follow a low FODMAP diet, you may wonder if about the FODMAP content of this favorite fruit.
According to the Monash University app, seedless watermelon is high in the FODMAPs fructose, mannitol, and fructan. These FODMAPs are poorly absorbed and consuming them can worsen the gut symptoms in those with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), including abdominal pain and bloating.
The Monash University app designates a serving size of 1.5 tablespoons (approximately 15 grams) of watermelon as an acceptable and tolerable amount for IBS during the restriction phase of the low FODMAP diet.
While high FODMAP fruits, melons can still be enjoyed in appropriate amounts. To learn more about FODMAPs and other types of melons, check out this article.
