Are Lemons Low FODMAP?

Written by Amy Kaczor MS RD LDN, Registered Dietitian

Are lemons a low FODMAP food?

FODMAPs (fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides, and polyols) are often a concern when it comes to fruit. Some fruits, such as apples and cherries, are high in FODMAPs fructose and sorbitol; however, others, such as grapes and oranges, are considered low FODMAP fruits (Monash University FODMAP Diet app). Fruits high in FODMAPs can cause an aggravation of irritable bowel syndrome symptoms, such as stomach cramping, constipation, stomach bloating, and flatulence (Veloso, n.d.).

Lemon, a citrus fruit often enjoyed in beverages and desserts, is a low FODMAP food. According to the Monash University FODMAP Diet app, half a cup of lemon juice is considered low FODMAP. Therefore, lemons should be tolerated well by individuals diagnosed with IBS (irritable bowel syndrome).

What are the health benefits of lemons?

Lemons are not only zesty and delicious in so many different usages, but they also have many health benefits for the body. Lemons are packed full of vitamin C, a compound that helps the body fight infection, heal wounds, and boost immune system function (University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, 2020). Lemons also contain significant amounts of calcium, potassium, and folate. Additionally, according to Texas A&M Health (2016), lemons can help improve cholesterol levels and may even have a protective effect against certain types of cancer.
