Is cilantro a low FODMAP food?
Cilantro is an herb packed full of flavor that is often added to soups, salads, and more that can also add a bright green and leafy accent as a garnish to a dish. Used worldwide, you might wonder if cilantro is okay to eat on the low FODMAP diet. So let’s talk about it.
FODMAP stands for fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides, and polyols. These sugars can increase the symptoms experienced in someone with irritable bowel syndrome, including constipation, diarrhea, or abdominal pain (Veloso, n.d.).
According to the Monash University FODMAP Diet app, fresh cilantro is a low FODMAP herb. When consumed at a serving size of one cup (or 0.56 oz), cilantro is generally safe for individuals with irritable bowel syndrome and will not likely cause an aggravation of symptoms.
What are the health benefits of cilantro?
Cilantro is rich in antioxidants - compounds that protect cells in the body against harmful compounds called free radicals. Full of vitamin c, vitamin A, and vitamin K, studies have also linked cilantro to a lower risk of cancer and fungal diseases (Ware, 2019). In addition, cilantro has anti-inflammatory properties and may also improve skin health.
