Is Dextrose Low FODMAP?

Dextrose, also known as corn syrup, is a sweetener formed from the enzyme breakdown of corn starch, prior to crystallization into glucose (Food and Drug Administration, 1988).

In other words, as dextrose is entirely glucose-based, it is a low FODMAP sweetener. However, it is important to distinguish dextrose corn syrup from high fructose corn syrup. Dextrose is one of the main components of high fructose corn syrup, but high fructose corn syrup is not safe for the low FODMAP diet.

The Monash Low FODMAP App has not specifically analyzed a safe serving size of dextrose or corn syrup. However, since dextrose is the same as glucose, which is not a FODMAP, any amount of dextrose should be considered safe and likely tolerated in individuals with irritable bowel syndrome.

What are the Health Implications of Dextrose?

Although a low FODMAP sweetener, dextrose is still considered an added sugar by the American Heart Association. When consumed in excess, added sugars can contribute to the development of chronic diseases, such as obesity, heart disease, and diabetes. It is recommended that women consume no more than 25 grams of added sugar daily, and men, 36 grams (American Heart Association, 2021).

In terms of benefits, when individuals experience low blood sugar or hypoglycemia, simple sugars such as dextrose and glucose are used to quickly raise the blood sugars back to normal.
