Low FODMAP Rooibos Red Herbal Tea - Caffeine Free, 1oz
Rooibos, pronounced “roy-boss” translates to “red bush” and is also known as “red tea” or “African red tea”. The scientific name is Aspalathus linearis and is a member of the legume family. Rooibos teas are a naturally sweet and sometimes nutty herbal tea that is also naturally caffeine-free. Rooibos is only grown in the Cedarburg Mountain region north of Cape Town, South Africa.
In 1772, a Swedish botanist found the locals of the Cape of South Africa brewing an herbal tea of a bush and the tea was referred to as “rooibos”. By the 1900s, immigrants to the Cape had improved the fermenting process by using similar methodologies of processing green tea.
Rooibos seeds are planted during February and March and are tended for 18 months when they are then harvested. The bushes are not actually red in color but are green and once harvested the bushes are cut into small pieces which are laid out to dry. South Africa’s intense sunlight slowly turns the rooibos into its signature rich dark red color. At this point Rooibos is cut, bound and milled to a uniform length and then bruised between rollers which trigger the fermentation process. This results in its sweet aroma and characteristic flavor.
